Lady Killigrew Cafe

Taste.

Lady Killigrew Cafe

I went to the Lady Killigrew Cafe at the Montague Book Mill.  It is an old building situated beside a beautiful brook.  The atmosphere is mostly of a younger intellectual clientele with students studying or playing on their laptops enjoying a cold beer.  It is cold outside, yet very warm and inviting inside. The menu here mostly consists of grilled sandwiches and salads.  When you walk in there is a large counter where you place your order, then you are given a number to place on your table.  When your order is ready the staff will bring your food to you. I ordered the peanut-ginger udon noodles and my father ordered the No. 5 special, honey ham, cheddar, whole grain mustard and marinated apple grilled sandwich which comes with a small house salad.

The Lady Killigrew Cafe offers wine and beer on the menu as well as free internet.  There are plenty of baked goods available to satisfy any sweet tooth.   With the book store attached to the dining room it is very convenient to purchase a new book as you settle in while you eat your lunch.
I can picture coming here spending a quiet afternoon with a good book or surfing the internet while sipping on a coffee or beverage, watching the snow fall outside, then sooner or later, when my appetite develops, ordering a sandwich or salad.

Outdoor seating is plentiful; people were indulging in great conversation with the unusually warm weather for December.   I saw some of the customers playing a game of cards or just listening to the soothing sounds of the waterfall/brook nearby. There is such a serene view, with comfortable surroundings all wrapped up in one wonderful place.

It is pretty busy today but the staff is able to keep up with the crowd. Our meals arrived rather quickly.  My udon noodles were of a very generous size.  I really enjoyed my udon noodles in the peanut-ginger sauce topped with carrots, broccoli and green onions.  The bread on my dad's sandwich was grilled to a nice golden brown, crispy, with oozing cheddar cheese then finished with the tartness of thinly sliced green apple.  The grainy mustard was a tasty addition with the cheddar cheese and ham.  I would have preferred more ham and apple in the sandwich however; all I can say is yum!

The people at the next table enjoyed salsa and chips then moved on to a couple of grilled sandwiches.  They appeared to be very happy with their food and drinks.  Their final words to each other before leaving were, “Very good, what else do we need?” “Nothing!” said his friend.

I would recommend The Lady Killigrew Cafe as a great place to meet a friend to catch up or to read a good book and surf the internet while enjoying good food and a beverage of choice. It is clean, the staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable for a coffee cafe style luncheon. The Lady Killigrew Cafe is open seven days a week, opens at eight in the morning to at least eleven at night. Check out their website at theladykilligrew.com.
